What's the deal with this party.

What to bring. 

Potluck encouraged.  Use this as an excuse to make a new recipe!  Bring a vegan dish, beverage, or a big smile to share.  Go ahead; get crazy.

Guests will be asked to fill out a card for any dish they bring, indicating the following.

What not to bring. 

Do not bring any consumables with: 

  • dairy (butter milk, whey, casein, cream, dairy yogurt) - note: cocoa butter is vegan

  • eggs or egg albumen

  • animal flesh [duh] - no beef, pork, chicken, fish, shellfish, chicken broth, oyster sauce, lard (eww)

  • honey - bring your honeybunny, but don't steal any from the bees

  • gelatin

  • note on alcohol: check www.barnivore.com (click beer, wine, or liquor) before bringing any alcoholic items

 

Not going to cook.  ever.  

Here are some junk food items you probably didn't know are vegan: 

 

  • Oreos

  • Bacos (yes, those Betty Crocker bacon bits)

  • Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, and now Skittles

  • Nutter Butter cookies

  • combine "Sour Supreme" or "Better Than Sour Cream" with onion or dill dip spice mix

Easy substitutions: 
  • butter: Earth Balance, some varieties of Smart Balance (check the label for "vegan"

  • mayonaise: Veganaise

  • milk: soy, almond, coconut, hemp, hazelnut, rice, etc. milk (tip: use plain for savory, use vanilla for sweets)

  • sour cream: Tofutti "Sour Supreme" or "Better Than Sour Cream"

  • buttermilk: add 1 TB apple cider vinegar or white vinegar to a liquid measuring cup, add milk until 1 cup mark, mix and let sit several minutes - voila

  • sausage/meat: Field Roast brand is AWESOME.  My favorite products: Field Roast, Tofurky Italian sausage, Tofurkey Peppered deli slices, Trader joe's vegan meatballs (frozen), Soyrizo or Trader Joe's vegan chorizo (both yum)
